Dermod O’Malley

Dermod O’Malley is highly experienced in the development of people in organisations. As a police officer and as a civilian employee with Hampshire Constabulary, he was responsible for the training and development of the training staff. He worked As an Associate Tutor within the Leadership Academy for Policing, Bramshill at Strategic and Executive level with others to develop senior police leaders and their teams. Dermod has participated in and facilitated cross sector Action Learning Sets for Local Government. These included delegates from other local government areas each operating in differing fields. He has run learning sets at Strategic and Senior Management level within the police service. In a recently completed programme, he facilitated five separate sets over a 9 month period. The composition of the set members ranged from Assistant Chief Constable to Union representatives. With individual set members having such differing and competing needs, this required a high degree of trust, personal respect and confidentiality and agreement that all were seeking to achieve a unifying ‘bigger picture’. Dermod coached officers on the High Potential Development Scheme (accelerated promotion) and he is currently providing Executive Coaching at the Home Office for 15 Civil Servants (Grade 6/7), some of whom have responsibilities within Health, Social care and prison rehabilitation. Dermod adopts a person - centred approach to coaching: he remains focussed upon achieving clients’ desired outcomes, by establishing what is important to them towards meeting organisational goals. He achieves this by developing a climate of trust which enables constructive challenge of limiting beliefs, behaviours and attitudes.

This process based approach means that he does not need to be a subject matter expert to coach people from differing working backgrounds as the focus is upon enabling the coachee to improve their service delivery. He is a member of the 'care group' which is a consultative body for the 'Specialist Services Division' which encompasses Intensive Care for the Southampton University Trust Hospitals. This was formerly known as the Critical Care Directorate.
